Good Sleep Essential for Good Skin - Aesthetic Studio

Sleep is one of the most essential activities for living beings, it helps restore, heal and resolve toxins in the body. The quality and duration of sleep have a profound impact on bodily functions, especially the skin, the largest organ present in the body. It is one of the most sensitive organs that readily displays any abnormality that the body experiences to the naked eyes. When sleep is compromised the skin is the first organ that shows the first signs in the form of hanging eyelids, swollen eyes, with dark circles under the eyes. Lack of sleep also causes the skin to appear pale with wrinkles and droopy around the corners of the mouth.  People who frequently sleep less also look sadder and fatigued when compared to people who get a good amount of sleep.

Effects of Lack of Sleep on the Skin

Hair

While not completely related to skin, it is attached to the scalp and any problem that affects the scalp(skin) shows signs on hair. Dry hair and premature hair loss are a few of the common side effects of frequent sleep deprivation. People who sleep less develop stress and experience an increase in the level of cortisol which in turn is the major cause of hair loss. Thus, adequate sleep is necessary for both good skin and hair.

Dull Skin

As previously discussed, lack of sleep increases the level of cortisol in the body, which triggers an inflammation that breakdown proteins in the skin that are responsible for keeping it radiant and smooth. Also, sleep is necessary to maintain proper blood flow in the body, whereas sleep deprivation causes blood to absorb a lesser amount of oxygen which makes the skin appear ashy, pigmented, or blotchy.

Eyes

Sleep deprivation dilates the blood vessel causing it to form dark circles under the eyelids. It also makes the eyes appear puffy as fluids accumulate underneath the eyes.

Dry Skin

Sleep is essential to regulate the level of hydration of the body, as it recovers moisture during sleep making it a natural moisturizer. Lack of sleep, however, disturbs this natural accumulation of moisture and lowers the complexion of the skin. The imbalance in hydration causes a drop in pH level and skin loses necessary moisture making it appear dry and lacking luster.

Production of Collagen

Sleep deprivation causes the development of stress as previously discussed; stress, however, impacts the integrity of collagen. Collagen is an ingredient in the skin that makes it appear youthful and elastic. If collagen breakdown, it advances the process of skins aging becoming thin and less firm. Thus, in a way lack of sleep advances the aging process of the skin making it rougher and lifeless. Once this process starts wrinkles start appearing on the skin.

Conclusion

Sleep is one of the easiest things to sacrifice to make more time, however, we forget that we are losing something more important in the process. Although you may argue that skincare isn’t as essential or appearance doesn’t matter, if it boosts your aging process you would at least take some measures to prevent premature aging. By giving the body an adequate amount of sleep you are able to live a more healthy and active life when compared to a dull and fatigued one. Good sleep is essential for good skin and also a good life.
