Why perform Breast Reduction?

Excessively large breasts can affect both the physical and emotional health of women. Physical discomfort can include neck, back, and shoulder pain caused due by strain from the weight of the breasts. The excess weight of breasts restricts their ability to lead an active life and few women with this condition sometimes have also been observed to experience poor posture,  strap marks, and skin irritation underneath the breast crease.

Few women feel self-conscious about having large breasts, this may cause them to feel negative about their body and experience emotional stress. The Breast Reduction procedure addresses both these physical and emotional challenges.

Things to know before considering performing Breast Reduction Surgery:

• This surgery is best done after breasts are completely developed.

• Breastfeeding can be done post-procedure but there may be a decrease in the milk secretion. Therefore, we can provide consultations if there are any plans to breastfeed a baby in the future.

• Pregnancy/lactation or significant weight loss/gain can alter the outcomes of previous breast reduction procedures.

• Smokers are at a higher risk of experiencing complications during this surgery. To reduce chances of risk and overall wellbeing, we recommended quitting smoking before appearing for this procedure.

Piercings on Breasts and nipples have a chance of causing an infection.

How is Breast Reduction Surgery Performed?

At The Aesthetic Studio, our female breast surgeon will do the markings prior to the surgery. The breast reduction procedure will be done under general anesthesia and the duration of surgery is about  3-4 hours.

Typically, during the Breast Reduction Surgery:

• An incision (cut) is made around the nipple and continued down to the breast crease. In some cases, an additional incision is made at the crease underneath the breast.

• In most cases, the nipple remains connected to its nerve and blood supply at all times. However, surgery of excessively heavy breast may require a ‘nipple graft’, in which the nipple is extracted and reattached at a higher position on the breast.

• Surplus fat, skin, and glandular tissues are removed after making the incision.

• Stitches are made deep within the breast tissue for giving extra support to the breast.

• The incisions made on the breasts are brought closer, sealed (sutured) and plastered.

The plaster is removed after 2 days and after which we recommend using a supporting brassiere for the breasts. About 7-10 days after surgery the sutures are removed with follow-up visits scheduled once every 2 weeks for the next 6 weeks. We suggest avoiding any strenuous activities for 6-8 weeks post-surgery.

What to expect Post-Surgery?

After breast reduction surgery has been performed, the patient can expect:

  • A drainage tube will be attached to the wound to avoid fluid build-up.

  • Swelling and bruising on the operated region.

  • Numbness in breasts.

  • Pain/ Discomfort.

The results of the breast reduction surgery would be immediately visible.
